Editing Smarter

ThreePartFilms has grown beyond what I thought we could in the five years we have been operating. We are currently working on a project that requires a pretty quick editing turnaround. So I was thinking, “what can we do to make this smoother and less stressful on everyone involved?” The solution is pretty simple: get more editors.
Hopefully, this will help someone, and I plan on posting a new blog when we hit milestones in this project.
Step 1, LET’S GET SETUP:

To get started, we needed editing drives for everyone. The total project is around 4.8 TB. We already have the needed media to get this project finished up, so we just needed a way to store it in multiple places for people to work off of.
We picked up four Samsung T5 EVO 8TB SSDs. The storage-to-price ratio was the best option. These drives are a little slow compared to other solid-state drives, but they work for editing and can work faster if not dumping almost 5 TB.
We got them in from Amazon, and everything was formatted and dumped. Delivery was made to get the drives into the hands of our team. Now, how do we communicate and collaborate on this? Adobe Premiere Pro has team projects, and we all have subscriptions to their services, so that’s what we went with. I would have used Blackmagic Cloud, but that would have added $300 per copy of Resolve and monthly payments for their services. This was not feasible in the project budget. Onward, we go to use one of the most annoying apps ever made.
Step 2, TEAM PROJECTS

Send out the team projects. We tried. So due to some issues with an account email, one of our editors was not able to receive the team project. OK, I’ll send a regular project to him, and we can use a cloud service to update the project file. I’ll copy and paste the edited timelines from him to the team project. Well, for a few minutes when I reopened the team project, it would lock up loading some assets. This is a great start.
So I got that fixed. Now communication. Let’s go with Slack. It’s free, and we can add a channel for this project with everyone on it while also having something we can look back up stuff we chatted about. OK, that’s set, and we are all in communication. Let’s get started.
Now we see how this goes. TEAM WORK!!!!
